Creating a subdomain and adding it to cPanel hosting Print

  • 136

A subdomain allows you to create additional addresses tied to your root domain name. For example a popular use is when setting up a storefront for your site and creating a domain shop.yourdomain.com

You can also manage DNS for this subdomain allowing you to point it towards another server if needed.

To create a subdomain, first you will need to log into your cPanel service.

  1. Once logged in click on “Subdomains” under the “Domains” header or search using the search bar at the top of the page.
  2. Once you are in the subdomains tool you will be met with the following options:
Subdomain: what you would like the subdomain to be, without the root domain. For example just type in “shop” for shop.yourdomain.com
Domain: Select what domain in your hosting account you would like to create a subdomain for
Document Root: Allows you to select where you would like the files for the site assigned to this subdomain to be stored, this is generally autofilled so is fine to leave
  3. Click Create and your subdomain will be created.

Once the subdomain has been created, all the DNS records within cPanel will be automatically created for you provided you have the correct name servers applied to the root domain name. If your domain name is not using our nameservers you will need to point the subdomain towards the hosting service using an A record with a value of the IP address for your service
